City of Souls

posted by m.d.

October was a deadly month. 31 days. 26 murders.

Nothing is changing.

One day into November, one murder.

As of November 1, 2007, 305 days into the year, 179 human beings have died a violent death on the streets of New Orleans. All but eight were shot. All but 13 were men. The average age of the murdered was 28. Almost two thirds were under 30.

If nothing changes – and nothing has – 2007 will end with 214 murders. That’s a murder every 1.4 days – almost a murder every day and a half. In a city of 300,000 people, this comes to a murder rate of 71 murders per 100,000 residents.

I'm speechless. Demetrius Gooden was my friend in elementary school.

It seem to be actually getting worse. Earlier this year we averaged one murder every other day,

It's amazing, isn't it?

I just can't wrap my brain around the gunshots I hear in the surrounding streets some nights.

Dwayne Landry, my cousin is at the top of the list. Dwayne was no gangbanger or drug dealer. These murders are senseless. These criminals hide behind weapons but cannot hold their ground behind bars. They'd be the first ones to drop their pants.

Antwon McGee was actually named D'Tione Magee and was 20. He is my wife's second cousin and lived with us, as our child, from the age of 6 until he was about 14.

He was in and out of trouble but never had never been accused of anything violent; such a waste.

I have to say, matter of I don't know what to say. I knew Dwayne Landry from high school. We kept in touch through out the years. He was a very good friend of mine and I didn't even know he had got murdered. I just found out today when I logged on to an account where he is on my friend list. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I am speechless!

Archie Solet was not a gangbanger- just at the wrong place. He was a wonderful, caring person. He was a father to three handsome boys, a husband,
a brother, a cousin, and a friend to so many who knew him. It was a shock to us all when we heard he had been shot. It is still very much surreal to us all.

my best friend was Carmen Leona Reese. She was raped and shot 4 times in the chest for no apparent reason at all. She was everything that God created as good. She is my best friend and I love her RIP Cupcake
